WHAT MAKES IT REAL?

LOCATION...

Outback Australia - West Macdonnell Ranges National Park

Ormiston Gorge is a beautiful gorge in the West Macdonnell Ranges, in the Australian outback. It also has the biggest most beautiful water hole.

The camp ground is next door to the day use car park and the hiking trails.

My only criticism of the campground is that there is little privacy from the other campsites. Some are just separated by a row of rocks. Although, in my book, having a hot shower made up for that.

The waterhole is only a 400m walk and is just wonderful, especially in the summer, as it is really cool. In the winter it’s freezing!

Ormiston Gorge West Macdonnell Ranges - drying our stuff after our swim!

We did the Ormiston Pound Walk. It’s a great walk with stunning views of the Macdonnell Ranges and we even had to swim at one point, which the kids got incredibly excited about. There is an assent early on in the walk, but it’s not too tough if you do it really early in the morning (in the summer anyway).

If you fancy going out for diner or having a beer in a pub, Glen Helen Resort is only 12km from Ormiston Gorge. We only went to Glen Helen to get ice though, so can’t comment on the rest of the resort.
