Big Sur Camping...tent camping in California on the beach
This amazing National Forest camp ground is right on Big Sur....literally on a headland jutting out over the Pacific!
Could you get a better real camping experience than one that allows you to watch a pod of dolphins pass by, just as the sun is setting and the sea is turning a brilliant pinky orange to match the sky above?
The best campsites (the ones that are right on the edge looking out over the sea) are 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21 and 22. If you reserve a campsite in advance, make sure it’s one of these.
There is a short hiking trail, between campsites 9 and 11, that takes you down to the beach. Someone has dammed Kirk Creek as it reaches the beach making a small lovely but cold pool...we lay in this for a while, it was a hot day!
Northern California Camping - the small but lovely pool in the rocks
If you walk over the rocks to the right there is a small sandy beach where you can while away the afternoon watching the waves crashing on the rocks.

There are 3 other hiking trails (Vincente Flat Camp - 5 miles, Stone Ridge Trail - 5 miles and Cone Peak Road - 8 miles) that take you up the hill behind the camp ground, giving amazing views over Big Sur.
You have free use of Sand Dollar and Pfeiffer Beach if you camp at Kirk Creek Camp ground!
$22 (hikers/bikers $5 per person) (50% off with a Golden Age/Golden Access seniors card) (2 vehicles and 8 people)
33 campsites
First come first served or reserve a pitch online through the Parks Management Company - www.recreation.gov/kirkcreek 1-805-927-4211 / 1-877-444-6777 (the camp ground is half reservable and half first come first served)
