Camping Snowdonia - view of Lake Llyn Gwynant Camping Site as we climbed Snowdon
Llyn Gwynant is a stunning campsite, on the shore of Lake Llyn Gwynant.
A great place to base yourself for walking up Snowdon.
You can walk up Snowdon directly from the campsite (it is 2 miles to the start of the main track) or you can drive and park nearer. To park at the actual start of the Snowdon track costs £10 for the day. However, you can park on the verge of the A498 near the Pen-y-Gwryd Hotel, at the bottom of the road leading up to Snowdon for £4 a day. There is a walking track that runs parallel to the Snowdon road that takes you to the start of the main track.
After you have climbed Snowdon reward yourself with a beer at the Pen-y-Gwryd Hotel. This is where the Everest climbers (inc. Hillary and Tenzing) stayed when they trained at Snowdon for their first ascent up Everest in 1953. After they conquered Everest they reunited at the hotel. Their boots and signatures adorn the walls.
Camping UK - Llyn Gwynant Campsite Snowdon
This Snowdon campsite is simple...just large grass fields tucked into a valley. You can choose to camp on the lake shore or on the river bank or anywhere else on the fields.
Word of warning: It can get very boggy in wet weather. So if rain looks likely make sure you are on a level part of the field and not in a dip.
Campfires are allowed (yeh!) but only in the fire pits provided and only with firewood purchased from the campsite. This is because the campground is in a conservation area and only certain wood can be brought on to the land and burnt.
The lake and river are great for kayaking and boating, or even swimming if it's warm. It was a lovely place to chill out after our Snowdon climb!
Camping UK - Facilities at Llyn Gwynant Campsite Snowdon
The facilities are great. Modern and clean. There is one shower in each toilet block (mens/womens), but there are 6 more uni-sex showers around the back of the toilet block. If you can though, use the shower in the toilet, as it is warmer in there and there is a shelf to put your stuff.
Swallows nest in the rafters of the toilet. I loved seeing them all squeezed up together chirping away.
A campers kitchen is planned for 2013, but in the meantime there are sinks under cover outside the toilet block. We cooked under here in the rain.
