New Zealand Wild Camping - Nukumaru Recreation Reserve
New Zealand wild camping, right on the beach!!! And it's a beautiful wild black sand beach strewn with drift wood.
We slept with the back curtains open and woke to a beautiful sunrise and crashing waves. One of the best real camping experiences you could ask for.
Then we spent the day walking on the beach, collecting shells, watching the fishermen pull in their days haul and meditated to the sound of the sea rolling up the beach. It was a magic day. In fact we loved it so much, we ended up staying for a week!!
NZ Camping - Waiinu Beach Camping...breakfast!
There are no designated campsites, just two large grass areas, one of which is only open in the summer. The main grass area has a toilet block, external shower (cold!!!) and a children’s climbing frame.
Wai-inu Beach was a New Zealand Freedom Camping ground until July 2011, when South Taranaki District Council started charging a fee. But it is a really nominal fee considering what a wonderful location it is.
1 December to end of February - $10 per campsite (collected by a Council officer)
1 March to 30 November - $5 per campsite (paid at the honesty box at the entrance or at 3 Beach Road)
No designated sites, just large grass area
First come first served
2 calendar months (although some signs say 50 days)
