WHAT MAKES IT REAL?

WILD AND FREE...

New Zealand Freedom Camping - Queens Reach Conservation Area, Te Anau

Free camping in Fiordland 2 hours (124 km) from Milford Sound!

This is a large DOC campsite on the Waiau River. Make sure you follow the gravel road round to the river side (not the boat ramp area on your left as you drive in) as these are the best campsites.

We spent a really peaceful couple of days here, relaxing by the river. Caught some decent sized trout too.

There is Didymo in the river here so...Check, Clean and Dry (as DOC say) before you leave.

New Zealand Wild Camping - Fiordland Free Camping, Te Anau

Amazingly enough, considering it’s proximity to Fiordland National Park (on the opposite bank of the river), there are no sandflies here. Bliss!

Directions:

  • Leave Te Anau, in the direction of Manapouri.
  • After 6km you will see the small sign on the left side of the road for Queens Reach Road, above which there is a bigger sign of a boat ramp (the road is on the opposite side of the highway to the sign).
  • Queens Reach Road is about 1km long and brings you out at the campground.
  • There is a small ford to cross just before you enter the campground (but it might not be so small in the winter).

PRICE:

Free camping

SIZE:

20 campsites (as described by DOC, but it is a large grass area with no designated sites and so can accommodate more campsites than that)
