WHAT MAKES IT REAL?

WILD AND FREE...

New Zealand Freedom Camping Near Ninety Mile Beach

Raetea Forest Reserve is an awesome campground. 18km south east of Kaitaia. Half hour drive from the start of Ninety Mile Beach at Ahipara.

Camp in a meadow next to a stream - wild and free. Go swimming in the lovely clear waters of the stream and just lie back in the long grass and watch the clouds.

The forest surrounding the campground is one of the last remaining lowland coastal forests, so it's a special place. Lots of birdlife - I'm not a birdo, so I couldn't tell you what they were, but there was a lot of bird chat going on in the trees!

We stayed here the night before we did Ninety Mile Beach! Which is awesome by the way. We had our own vehicle (we're here for a year...working) so we decided to drive it ourselves. Our car is not 4wd, but we drove it ok. There were quite a few normal cars driving on the beach.

It was so amazing to drive along a beach as if it was a highway. You can't do that in America. Pretty cool. Oh and we saw wild horses :o)

Here's me on the dunes, near the end of Ninety Mile Beach...very happy!!

I LOVE NINETY MILE BEACH!!

How To Find Raetea Forest Reserve:

  • Look out for the DOC campsite sign on State Highway 1 (it is set back from the road, in a lay-by).
  • Follow the gravel road (that runs parallel to the highway) down into the meadow.
  • The campground is on the other side of the stream, which you are supposed to ford. When we were here the stream was pretty high and so we decided to camp on this side of the stream and just wade across to use the toilet.

By the way...the vault toilet was replaced in 2011 and even has a tiled floor - nice.
