WHAT MAKES IT REAL?

LOCATION...

NZ Camping - Maitai Bay Karikari Peninsula

Maitai Bay Recreation Reserve is a fabulous DOC campsite on the Karikari Peninsula.

I just love Maitai Bay. We have been coming here as a family for years (since the kids were tiny). The beach is stunning...white sand, tree covered rocky headland at either end, great snorkelling, and sheltered waters.

We have quite a large motorhome and have no problems camping here.

The bathroom facilities block is nice, but the showers are cold (not so bad in the summer after a day on the beach).

It can get really busy here in the summer, so arrive before 11am to secure a spot. Although there is no check-out time so it is a good idea to just ask around if anyone is leaving later that day and then register yourself at that campsite.

Because you have no privacy from your neighbours, it is best to grab a corner campsite if you can.

Bring plenty of cold beer. Although you can buy more at the little town of Merita (just before Matai Bay) if you run out.
