Wyoming camping (Mammoth Hot Springs - Yellowstone National Park)
This Yellowstone camping ground is very near Mammoth Hot Springs and so is very popular. But it is a lovely place to stay.
The views of the distant snowy peaks, the craggy mountain side opposite are wonderful.
It felt an incredibly wild place to be when we were awoken in the early hours of the morning by a wolf howling on the ridge above...just brilliant.
Yellowstone National Park camping with a friendly Elk!
It is not just the wolves that make it feel wild though - this Yellowstone camping ground is a very popular hang out for Elk! They have obviously realised that although humans are quite noisy, they keep the big Elk-eating-creatures away.
So be careful walking to the toilet in case you give one a scare (they can charge you if frightened).
You can walk from the campground to Mammoth Hot Springs and the Mammoth village in about 30 minutes. The trail takes you over the ridge behind the campground, so it is a little steep to begin with.
Don't miss out on the 5 mile Beaver Ponds Loop Trail, which you can do from the Mammoth Village. The trail starts at either the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel or just below the main hot springs. This is a great family hiking trail and the scenery is stunning. You may just catch sight of a beaver. We didn't, but we did see a grizzly bear in the distance!
